Pollution prevention is a way of addressing wastewater problems before they happen, in an effort to reduce water contamination in the first place. It can be practiced at the household, corporate or institutional level. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 makes pollution prevention a national policy.

Pollution prevention techniques range from easy-to-implement options to more comprehensive approaches to reducing waste. Pollution prevention options include finding and using materials that produce less waste or non-toxic waste; performing preventative maintenance to minimize potential for leaks of dangerous chemicals; avoiding the mixing of wastes to minimize the number of wastes in any given stream; and providing employees with incentives to minimize waste generation.
