The term “reclaimed water” applies to wastewater that is treated to such a high level that it is safe for reuse, usually for non-potable (not for drinking) purposes like landscape irrigation or heating and cooling. When wastewater is treated and reused, it is not discharged into streams, rivers or lakes where it would cause pollution. Furthermore, the rising water needs of urban communities demand the most efficient use of scarce water resources.

Water reuse increases the available water supply, reduces the vulnerability of drought and demands less use of freshwater. It has been proven to be successful in creating a renewable water supply while not compromising public health. As water demands and environmental needs grow, water reuse will play an increasingly important role in our overall water supply.
